Web Site Design with Street Maps - Helping customers find you
Do your clients know how to find your brick and mortar business? Clear, You hired an excellent web site design company to revise its previous site, improving your online presence with some pay-per-click advertising, and now the traffic Internet is increasing. But if your business depends on people walking through your front door or gate, do clients know where to go?
One sign of trouble is that the phone calls from people asking for directions, especially when calling from within a five minute drive of your business. Why do not find it?
A good solution is to print a map on its website. You might have expected that people enter your street address into Google Maps or Yahoo! Maps, but think how easy it is for users to find and print a map from your own site.
Here are some options:
- Scan an existing image of your brochure in a computer and change the size of a Web page. Unfortunately, the results rarely look as crisp and clean as they did on paper bright, especially words that are unreadable.
- Hire a web designer to create an interactive map with a tool like Adobe Flash. Please account that some Web browsers may not have the technology to see the results, so you may lose customers.
- Recruit an artist to draw a custom map, including its building (or buildings) and the main entrance. This is the best way to map exactly how you want to display.
- Hiring a Web developer to use a mapping service like Google Maps, Yahoo! Maps or MapQuest on your web site. If done well, this option provides the best interactive mapping experience for users.
- Show a screenshot of an interactive map in your site. This will frustrate advanced users, because the map that you click on the picture, trying to pan or zoom.
If you design a custom map:
- Show relevant streets and cross streets with street names readable.
- Show customers where to park and where to find the main entrance.
- Include a simple indicator lamps. To avoid confusion, in the north where the top of the drawing, no matter the direction for all customers will face his front door or gate.
- Consider more than one map display at different zoom levels, to help customers find its business in the state, city and street levels.
If you use a mapping service:
- That the map as large enough for users to see everything they need to see (especially buildings and street names), no zoom or scroll.
- Form maps based on (usually with colored lines to the streets on a white background) are easier to understand than satellite photos. Alternatively, you can include controls to switch to satellite photos.
- For users to interact with the map, including zoom and scroll controls.
- If your map has a "find directions to us" theme, before uploading your street address into the text boxes destination.
For any map:
- Make sure users can find the site map. Keep near the top of navigation the site, not buried in deep layers of menu options such as information - Visit Us - Location - Map
- Try printing your map. Is it large and clear enough to be read while riding in a car?
I saved the most important advice for the end: No matter what type of map you use, shows your address (with number and name) on your home page, or even on every page of your website. With a well-designed map and address clearly visible on your site, the pedestrian traffic is bound to increase. About the Author
