History of Las Vegas

In 1829 the French members of the Antonio Armijo party, gave Las Vegas its name and uses the water around the area, while made their way along the Old Spanish Trail from New Mexico. During this time there were small parts of the Las Vegas Valley had artesian wells that were capable of withstanding large green areas. That's where the name came from Las Vegas. It is Spanish for "The Meadows".

On May 10 1855 after Las Vegas was taken by and incorporated into the United States - Brigham Young was ordered to take 30 Mormon missionaries to help convert the Paiute Indians in the area. They built a fort in what is now the center of town. But over the years could have problems among Brigham and woke people new to the area. New people that wine had more liberal views and Brigham questioned practices. This stress caused the Mormons to leave in 1857.

In coming years the ownership of the Las Vegas Valley and the fortress built within its borders that pass between the divided parts of the United States. It was not until 1881 that Archibald Stewart and his wife, Helen J. Stewart would get the land and became the new Postmaster of Las Vegas.

In 1884 the Stewart family would face a tragedy when Archibald was killed - but this did not stop the plans were underway to expand the property. At the Stewarts were able expand to 1,800 acres and maintain the ground until it was acquired in 1902 by the San Pedro, Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad. Railroad construction would bring many people to Las Vegas to help grow the population. Many of these people were farmers.

Another boost in the population would reach in 1930, when President Herbert Hoover would sign the appropriation bill for the Boulder Dam. The population increased from 5000 to 25,000, hoping that would be given the task of helping build the dam. When completed the dam will help provide electricity for Las Vegas. The city became the first customer of the Company of Southern Nevada Power and Dam's name was changed to the Hoover Dam.

For now, Las Vegas had done a name for itself due to the construction of the dam. But the year 1931 would remain forever in the minds of people and became the starting time to grow to new heights. Heights that no city had been reached.

In 1931, legalized gambling and Las Vegas began its rise to become in the capital of the world game. The city issued its first gaming license in 1931 - which occurred in the Northern Club. Soon other casinos opened their doors to those who wanted a chance and gamble with your money. Fremont Street, the Club of Las Vegas, and Hotel Apache were among the first.

In order to attract people to its casinos they wanted to deliver excitement and fun. Fremont Street is known as Glitter Gulch, because of all the lights that were powered by the Hoover Dam. Lake Mead and Hoover Dam helped bring the tourists - which called for more hotels. These hotels are upper class would be appropriate enough to accommodate high-class people who came. The city has evolved over the years and the hotels and casinos have evolved into something big and exciting place for those wishing to leave their inhibitions down.
